nothing should disappear into the background

Should technologies really recede into the background and become invisible? Weiser got it all wrong. In an age when invisible (and controlling) technologies increasingly obfuscate relationships and causalities between people and objects, making life easier with slick technical inventions is no longer a desirable goal. We really don't need any more automatic garage door openers. Instead, we might want to reconsider the fundamental tenets of technology and how to work with it such such that life becomes richer, not just easier.
